Adding a gadget by URL in Google Wave

It's a real simple and real easy thing to add a gadget by URL in google wave... however, i'm writing this post because i've come across some people who asked me how to do it??

Google Wave, because of it's rather new concept, architecture and working, a lot of users are confused how to use it?? An IM plus an email platform plus media sharing platform plus social networking and more.. it's just enough to make a non geek freak out!!

So here's what you've to do to add a gadget (it's just a series of clicks):

You can create an entire new wave (it's like a new message taken as a whole) yourself or reply to a wavelet (it is a part of a wave similar to a part of the chat lines while chating with your friends online) another waver. The following shows a wavelet. You can click on the blue rounded-corner rectangle below to reply to a wavelet.

When u do that, you are in 'edit mode', then you'll be able to see the toolbar (blue wavy line in below pic),

then click the 'Add gagdet by URL' tool from the toolbar (encircled in red in above pic). U'll be able to see a pop-up, as below,

Now, add the gadget URL there, it's that simple

Googling for 'Google wave gadgets" will return a lot of useful URL gadgets, or you can try out Google Wave Gadget.

Even dreamed of Hacking a website? Ever wonder how to get into ones website and deface it?

Well dream it.. there's no harm in doing that; but don't practice it (Are you confident enough about hiding your traces behind?).

Words be, lemme tell you a few live hacks done through SQL injections. You can try right now as it works (by the time this post is written) but CONSIDER doing it at your OWN RISK. What i'm telling here is more of a Ethical Hacking; that means, know that it can be done the way I'm explaining here, and find out how to protect from being a victim yourself.

It's simple. Most people think Hacking is for the master coders only, which rather is wrong. Of course some knowledge are required and depending on the level of security, one can break through any system. HACKING into a system can be minimize but you CAN'T guarantee a 100% secure system.. as there is always a way!!

So now, here are some sites which lack some serious security measures:

What the web developer of these sites have done is, they forgot, or don't know how to use a escape string function (in PHP language). I won't go into details just for the sake of the laymen. They don't know or haven't implemented certain measure to exclude certain characters from being input by the user. When a site asked for a username & password, what happens is that, the code checks the username to the username existing in the database and compare with the password in the same row with the user input password. If both the conditions returns TRUE, then the user is shown the next password protected page.

Look at this: "1' or '1' = '1". Put the above in the username as well as the password field (without the double quotes). Here we formed an always TRUE condition as 1 always equals to 1. Or you can change it '2' = '2' or anything else. Now press enter and voila, you are at the backend of those sites. You can change anything from the backend.

The Missing Gmail Labs Feature

Google has done a lot to improve its emailing features and User interaction through the Labs module. However, I strongly felt that the gmail labs lack one 'mundane' feature which everyone needs and would be happy to include with; and that is - an urgency rating system.

If you are one person who uses the email service frequently to communicate, you perhaps must have come to notice that the rating system is extremely essential.

What Google can add to its labs feature is a 5 options rating module, say something like the one shown on the right. The module is suppose to rate the urgency of the email.

What one usually does is read the email he or she receives first, and so the last email you sent, even though it is urgent, could be read last. It's kind of a FIFO arrangement. You can mention in the subject line, the degree of urgency but there is a better way to do that.

You can simply send a 'Someone's Dying' rated email. The subject line will appear in the corresponding color and one will identify it as soon as he sees the subject, (everyone reads the subject to the mails they received..don't they?).

Someone's Dying:
This is an email of the greatest priority. You rate this when there is and extreme need for the recipient to read the mail as soon as possible.

Finish your Coffee:
This are normal emails. The recipient reads it as when he feels like reading.
Most emails should fall in this category.

I'm Feeling Lucky:
It is a Google style rate. The recipient reads it as he wants. You can rate this when you think the email is really interesting.

Actions Required:
You give this rating when the recipient needs to perform some Actions; as the likes in which site administrators sent to its users to inform the change in its privacy policy and the users need to accept it before continuing using.

No Reply:
This is an email sent when you don't need a reply but want to inform the recipient.

How I'd been these past few days

It's been some time since i posted my journals here. Basically, I've been busy with a lot of stuffs. Shristi 2009, the annual techno-management fest of NERIST is about to start from 6th to end on the 8th of April 2009.

As the site developer and administrator of the official Shristi site, www.shristi.org, I'd been pretty busy keeping it up with the requirements. The Shristi Open Rubik's Cube event which is going to be held at an international level is one such awaited event; and the workshops given on Robotics by the the Professional Mumbai based Robotics firm, Technophilia and the workshop on Ethical Hacking and information Security under Kyrion, a Delhi based hacking club were magnificient. I gained much knowledge from the workshops delivered by Kyrion and today, there is going to be a small competition on live hacking and am hoping for a good outcome.

Moreover, the annual Magazine of NERIST, the Altius 2009 (Vol VIII) has just been done with the graphics and design part has already printed and about to be released on the start of the Shristi 2009. It took me around 3 days to complete the whole graphics, designs and layouts for the magazine.

Apart from that, shortly from now, I'll developing a complete site for the BioInformatics center newly opened under the Department of Forestry, NERIST.

Embarrasing Google Street View images

Google was forced to remove hundreds of pictures from its street view mapping service within hours of its launch facing complaints from people who said that the system breached their privacy.

The street view gives 360-degree views of 25 cities and towns allowing users to take virtual tours from their computers or mobile phones. The initial laumch hit hundreds of thousands of visitors when it began on thursday; but google faced a deluge of complaints from homeowners and members of the public shown by its cameras, who demanded that photographs be taken down.

Blogger (including me!!) and internet sites posted embarrasing scenes captured by the service. Among the pictures removed were a man vomiting on a pavement, one leaving a sex shop and another entering a sex shop; another guy being arrested. These images were blacked out later with the message: "This image is no longer available". However, street view users were able to travel a few meters down the road and turn the camera back to see the same people from a different angle.

Google spent more than a year coveing 22,000 miles to collect images with car-mounted cameras (one such car can be seen in the photo a the top of this article). Some people complained that viewers could zoom into the open windows of their homes which is a sole matter of privacy intrusion.

The company promised to remove any pictures to which individuals objected. "We put tools in place to allow people to remove images quickly".

Apple iPhone 3.0 software update

Come June, Apple CEO Steve Jobs will rejoin after his extended medical leave (The cancer case was one of the rarest kind of which there is a cure and fortunately he's cured). That is when we will be geting our 3.0 software upgrade for the iphone free of cost and for the iPod touch for $9.95.
Short of Jargon, Apple will give developers the tools to make better iPhone Applications, but what will the users get?

Here's the list of the key benefits out of a 100 Apple says the iPhone 3.0 update will give.

1) Cut, Copy and Paste across all applications. (When this annoucnement was made, thunderous applause greeted prompting synics to ask why peoople were clapping for a feature that every mobile phone already has!!)
2) Forwarding SMSes and the ability to delete multiple messages at one go.
3) MMS, I isn't quiest necessary, but with QR code it can be used to sell tickets. QR codes store addresses, URLs and other informations that can appear in magazines, business cards, on advertisements and tickets. The code can be generated by a phone application and sent to a user as an MMS. This again is scanned using a mobile phone to permit entry to converts, movies among other things.
4) Spotlight. OS X Leopard's search facility will be added to the phone. I always hated swiping through seven or eight pages to find the app I wanted to run. With spotlight I'l get there in a jiffy.
5) Turn by turn GPS navigation. If your city is not mapped properly by google you can download third-party maps like map my india.

6) Support for Bluetooth stereo headphones.
7) Exchange files and contacts over Bluetooth. Songs will be excluded.
8) Instantly hook up with another Bluetooth phone and start playing games. No pairing is required.
9) You can now type your emails in landscape mode. This gives you more space between keys and lessens the chances of hittin the wrong alphabet. You can type fater this way.
10) Parental Controls. Parents can now ban sites and videos that they do not want their children to watch.
11) Better streaming of videos. The iPhones will adjust playback depending on your internet speed. So you'll get uninterrupted streaming.
12) Tethering. You can use your iPhone as a modem to get onto the Internet.
13) Voice Memo. You can record your letters and mail them and even attach contacts.
14) Sending contacts to others.
15) Attach multiple photos in an e-mail. Currently you can attach only one picture.
16) Search your e-mails. If it is not found on the phone it will search the server too.
17) Subscriptions. This will allow you to buy new levels of games through the application. You'll be able to buy magazines, books and even newspapers through the Kindle 2 app that is already available in teh Apps Store.
18) Push. Instead of running applications simultaneously, draining battery life, audio and text alerts will be pushed into the closed app.
19) Medical Apps will alow you to measure your blood sugar levels through an adaptor and even track your blood pressure.
20) With the freedom given to developers the iPhone can be turned into a control panel for practically any piece of electronics you can plug it into. This will allow users to pair the phone with a set os speakers to turn the screen into a digital equalizer. And oh yes, just shake your phone to shuffle your songs. Remember it's and iPod too!!

Today, I happened to look up googling my own name and see what the result is like. I find some sites which is quite irrelevant with me, or rather some sites which I've no or little connection or actually have forgotten for long. Truth be told, I'd been inactive with spock but the spock page still shows up the second in my result list. The first of course is this blog only, the 3rd (LinkedIn), i just opened my account 2 days back there, and much of the rest sites below are developed by me (excepting Flickr, Facebook and MIT of course!). One disappointed is that Google doesn't show my own Facebook page, instead showing my friends page.

1) What is SIBI?

SIBI is a new generation Online Music Player. The main concept lies in its portability and user friendly aspects.
In SIBI, users can upload their own mp3s on the SIBI server, create their own SIBI playlists, manage their uploaded files and listen it through the SIBI online player from their home PC or Mac, PMPs such as the Ipod, or through their mobile devices which supports the required platform.

2) Why SIBI?

SIBI is different, or in fact the first of its kind. It is NOT an online Radio Player.
It is different because users can upload their own music collection on the server and access it from anywhere on this planet (of course when you are connected!!). It can be imagined as the Winamp combined with your hard drive online.
Many people usually have a wide collection of music in their PC or Mac, which usually of course, exceeds the capacity of a common PMP (say of 4gb or 8gb, I myself have a collection of more than 90gb!!) and almost everyone hears music while on the travel, on the way to college, on the way to his friends place and so on; but none have the time or the patience to choose out his favorite ones to be uploaded in his 4g or 8gb PMP. No one likes to sit down and make a new collection of his mp3s which will squeeze in his PMs Memory capacity and at the same time includes all his favorites. But when you are on a journey, say a cross country tour, you won’t want to carry your laptop or PC over to everywhere you go, but the PMP, sure is meant for that time and moreover, you won’t know which type of songs you are going to listen during the journey; it depends on the place you visit, or the people you meet or it could be anything.

Bottomline: You do not know which one to put around. You just want to listen to it when you feel like listening to it.

3) Challenges to bring SIBI into production?

i) Users have to be provided a large online storage area, say 50gb for the start.

4) Purpose for SIBI?

SIBI provides users the ability to listen their favorite music anywhere, everywhere without any unwanted extra efforts, provided he has a supported connection on his PMP.

5) Monetization.

SIBI is targeting to grab the music market. On the SIBI main page, ads for new album releases or monetized services related to music can be displayed so that users can buy them. (refer the UI design section). To increase sales, displayed new album should be displayed by finding out the user’s favorite band or music which can be known by checking out the most played songs in his or her playlist. By checking what type of songs the user uploaded, such as which bands, which region of the world the user belong, displayed new album info can be on the basis of user interest which increases the chances of sales.

Windows: Generic Win32 Service Error

I've come across this problem myself and I tried googling a lot and found out a few methods to fix this problem but, the interesting part is that NONE works.

With this error, your audio, your networks, the graphics; all are affected. Your audio devices will not be shown in the devices section, your internet will not work and one thing for sure is that, you'll be really pissed! The error seems to be caused by some old version of HP printer drivers. Microsoft has release updates for Windows XP sp2 but the problem still continues with SP3. (Haven't tried with Vista)

I read about a few other methods other than the WORKING one I've given here, and that includes software updates or patches from Windows and HP; but as I'm using a new enough software, the patch didn't work.

Anyway, here's the steps for Manual fixing, which is by far the best:

1. Open Registry Editor: Start>Run and in the box type: regedit and press OK.
2. Find "TransportBindName”. (Edit>Find or Ctrl+F) It may take a few mins to search. (You can look for it yourself at the location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\NetBT\Parameters)
3. Double-click on that value and delete the default value in the box and press OK.
4. Find the value “EnableDCOM”, located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole
5. Double-click on that value and set the value in the box as ‘N’ which currently maybe set as ‘Y’.
6. Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.

I think this will solve your problem.

Shristi.org: the Series of hurdles

I've been approached to build and launch the the website for the Techno - Management Festival of my university. I've designed and developed a couple of websites on my own and so it wasn't a big deal, or at least i thought so, for me at FIRST. Things however, have been going pretty weasy and confusing with various hurdles and problems i've to face which are quite unexpected and uncool.

The very first hurdle was when znetindia.com took 3 days to process my domain registration order. The second one came when i found out that znetindia doesnt bundle DNS control with the domain registration; and for which i've to activate an extra addon for the domain paying extra money. The third was the unfriendly user interface structure of the znetindia account manager area (if you are a starter, i bet you won't be able to find out where you should change your nameserver if your are changing your hosting service to some other service provider!). The fourth was when i realise that the TTL values for the DNS at znetindia was quite huge, which means any update in the DNS, A, MX, CNAME, NS, TXT etc will take time for its propagation. This happened when i mistyped the NS records and then i realise i mistyped it, i had to change it and for the change to propagate, i had to wait the whole day.

Later when everything from the domain point of view is working, unfortunately, my PC breaks down... or at least i thought so, coz later on i found it was my wireless modem problem. As an engineering student, and in the CSE branch, i use to do a lot of stuffs on my PC and it is not uncommon that i install a fresh copy of Windows a couple of times every month. This time, i'd already formated my PC 4 to 5 times since my semester starts, and that would be from the 1st week of Jan and i've already made it by heart the serial number to my copy of the windows. For development purposes, i've created a lot of complex structures, programs and databases that i don't want to lose but i'd to compromise some to make my PC working again.

Now, everything is set, the site is up (www.shristi.org, though still under active construction) and i'm using joomla cms for a quick built. A problem which i'd never faced before arises to my joomla hosting then. At the same hosting company, with the same apache, php and mysql configuration, i'm hosting another joomla website and it's not showing any problem but however in this website, problems after problems showered. I'd the problem fixed temporarily although it's not the best way to fix the problem.

The Joomla problem was that, whenever you try to upload/ install a component/ plugin/ module/ template etc, you got an error message "Warning! failed to move file".

This happens because of certain settings and file permissions on your joomla host. There are methods to overcome this problem but they are not the best yet known. For some, setting CHMOD to 777 for the" public_html/tmp" file seems to work but for others it's far from solving. Some solved it by disabling the FTP layer at joomla, but some solve it by just changing the temporary path "public_html/tmp" to "public_html/temp" or the vice versa. Other ways to solve includes giving the php file more space changing the php.ini, which requires contacting your hosting company. The best method, however, seems to be disabling the php "Safe Mode", which also require you to contact your hosting company.

For now, as my works need to be completed in a short period, i'd changed all the files/folders concern to 777 giving permission to change and execute to all while making the installation and then changing back to the normal CHMOD file permission after the installation is over; leaving no ways for hackers to poke their nose in. If you are having this problem, u can do it as i've done as it is the simplest and will always solve it regardless of the FTP, php.ini, apache or any other settings.

NovaTechNetwork has done a great job with there hosting servers. I prefer them.

Anyway, let me see if there're any other problems that are gonna pop up in front of me..

If you’ve been prompted to install the Flash plugin but nothing happens, then you’ll need to manually install it yourself by downloading the Flash plugin from Adobe and playing a few tricks to install it into Google Chrome. No need to fear however because the installation procedure is pretty straightforward and you’ll have a Chrome Flash plugin enabled browser in no time.

Download the Flash player xpi for Windows.
Add a .zip extension to the file. It should now be: flashplayer-win.xpi.zip

Extract the contents and copy two files “flashplayer.xpt” and “NPSWF32.dll” (indicated in the screenshot below) over to C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\Plugins in XP orC:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\Plugins in Vista (thank you Derek), making sure to change ‘user’ to your Windows login name. You can avoid having to unhide hidden files in Windows Explorer simply by copying and pasting the directory path provided above into the path bar.

Restart Google Chrome, then see if you can watch a YouTube video to see if it worked. Or just come back to this page.

Want to protect your idea??

Recently...errr well not really, it was a while ago since i've been thinking about the procedure to protecting one's original idea/concept about something... I said IDEA or CONCEPT.

The first thing that came into my mind was of a Copyright Protection. However, copyright doesn't protect your ideas/concepts. I've gone through some of the US and Indian copyright protection handbook and that led me to the conclusion that copyright, in any case, doesn't protect your ideas from being 'copied'.

The question arises now... Can an idea be protected??

Yes. An idea can be protected in the form of an invention. Patenting the creation and the technical drawings (related to the idea) is one option but someone in the university, a student or any individual may not be ready to spend the handful amount of dollars required to get the idea patented. Copyright, on the other hand is cheap and protects your idea in the form of an innovation or original creation. If you've created something, putting a © symbol protects your creation but however, you need to register it (which though requires a small fee) if in case legal issues are to be fought. Putting a © symbol conveys that the creation is copyright property and just putting the symbol ensures it rights. For federal acts or legal proceedings, valid registration with the Copyright Protection Department in your country is essential.

Other ways to protect your ideas include submission of your ideas to organisations. Many of which are available online and some charges small amount of fees while others doesn't. Another way is to mail yourself all the required documents provided the envelop in still sealed. This is valid only when there is a date stamped on the envelop by the post office and which represents the date on which your idea becomes 'yours'. However, this method is not much recommended.

Bottomline is, turn your idea into an innovation first...

My December started with a real head spin; as from the 1st itself, my fifth year examination began!! However, I'm a student and i've faced enough examinations that this time was nothing special though that I can't deny it's sinfully tough!!

After the exam ended, on 10th december, 2008, i started off my journey to cover India in around a month. My bus arrived at 7:45pm that day and the start off flag was waved. To make it short, lemme give the timestamp and what i was doing:

11th Dec, 2008:
4:33 AM - Reached Guwahati ISBT.
7:38 AM - The Kamrup Express arrived. I was boarded at S4/41 & Romen at S4/44.

12th Dec, 2008:
7:49 AM - Arrived at Howrah Station, Kolkata.
9:01 AM - Went to Manipur Bhawan but din't get a room so checked out a Hotel at KYD street near Park Street. (we were on WMT 4967) 12:10 PM - Took our Brunch at the Hong Kong Restuarant. I'd Chinese Chop Suey... Saw a beautiful gal who look like the actor in the movie "When stranger Calls"(I forgot her name..was something like Isabelle!!)
Just after that, we went to the Indian museum there (was kinda borriiiingggg!!!!).
3:05 PM - Visited the Victoria Memorial Hall. Got tired after walking so longand so sitting on a wooden bench inside the hall resting for a while.
4:35 PM - Birla Planetorium: Show's suppose to start at 6:30 PM and tickets are to be available from 6:00PM. So we went to the St. Cathedral's Church instead & I found this stuffs on a chart inside the church-

As a college student, right now I'm having my college examinations going on...to be precise, my exam's gonna start tomorrow (1st Dec, 08) and ends on the 6th of December. How to reset my Joomla administrator password?

Joomla's admin username can be easily changed with a simple MySQL query. The most convenient way to manage the database is through the phpMyAdmin tool. Go to your cPanel and click on phpMyAdmin in the Databases box. (If you are not using cPanel or do not have phpMyAdmin, you can run the query directly for Joomla's database.)

Once in the phpMyAdmin select the Joomla's database from the drop-down menu at left. The page will refresh and the database's tables will be displayed on it. Open the SQL tab (look at the top navigation bar).

In the text field write the following SQL query:

UPDATE `jos_users` SET `password` = MD5( 'new_password' ) WHERE `jos_users`.`username` = "admin" ;

"new_password" - replace this with the new password you wish to use.

"admin" - replace this if your admin username is different.

Once you are ready, click on the GO button to submit the query. If everything goes fine without errors, you should be able to login to Joomla with the new password.

Note: These instructions are valid both for Joomla 1.5 and Joomla 1.0.*.

How to remove protectfile.vbs virus

Yesterday one of my junior was trying to print a few stuffs he bought in his pen drive using my PC. He said he did scanned for viruses (am using AVG) but the scan showed no detection; however i got this protectfile.vbs virus on every drive of my PC. The most annoying thing it did was that, your CD or DVD drive will be ejected by itself. Whenever you try to open any of your drive by double clicking on it, a new window will be opened instead of the same window. This is quite an annoying thing (if you are using linux with default settings, you perhaps know about this!!).

The protectfile.vbs virus makes hidden, read-only multiple copies of itself in all the drives which are difficult to be detected. It can’t be deleted or renamed without disabling its “read-only” property. And lastly when we try to delete any one of the multiple copies, it uses an autorun.inf (executed automatically by windows) file to recreate itself from its copies in other drives.

So i tried googling for its remedy. I did found out a lot of ways to remove the virus but none was quite effective. I looked for the methods at thinkingpal, yahoo answers and the potpourri4u blog. By "effective", i meant, u don't want to download stuffs to remove that file but you do want to remove it... better it be that u be able to remove it with minimum efforts!! So, here's the best method i can provide you to remove the virus. All the steps are similar to wat's available, but the important thing is that, many bloggers failed to mention step 5 (coz they perhaps never tried, but just COPY-PASTED these steps) which is a MUST:

1) Press Ctrl+Alt+Del (Task Manager)

2) In the Processes tab , Kill the processes : explorer and wscript.exe (if available)

3) Go to File> new task

4) Go to command Prompt (Enter cmd in Run)

Go to the drive c:\

Type del /f/q/a protectfile.vbs

and del /f/q/a autorun.inf

Go to c:\windows\system32

and enter del /f/q/a secureguard.vbs

5) Now delete protectfile.vbs and autorun.inf by going manually to the root of each drive (use windows explorer tree form, do not double click on the drive icons)

If you don't see the file, go to folder options, select the view tab, uncheck the hide protected operating system files button then check the show hidden file button. Click apply and then OK.

6) Goto regedit (enter regedit in Run) and search for protectfile.vbs and delete all entries with this name.

7) Now search for the secureguard.vbs and modify it as in the path del only "c:\windows\system32\secureguard.vbs" and let the other part of the path be as it is.

8) Restart your system

A more simpler option maybe found at dirtycraft blog.

I hope that does it... and i'm sure, no pop ups will be shown at each restart of your PC!!

Current work I'm taking up is developing KanglaPark.com.

Kanglapark.com is the Manipuri social networking site. An approach to connect the people of Manipur. With the emergence and the unpopularity of sites like manipurfriendfinder.com, there still are works to be done. I hope KanglaPark will get some attention though.

KanglaPark.com is powered by Joomla with Joomunity. Joomunity component is just released as

Beta 2 and there still are some really unwanted bugs and I'm working on correcting the php codes and some errors. As soon as the bugs are free, I'll be releasing KanglaPark.com as the beta version. Let's see how far KanglaPark can go.

KanglaPark: Get Social Icon

The most recent work I've done is developing a website for our college at www.nerist.ac.in. Since I'm not much an expert in the new CSS plateform, the site has some 'looks' problem on Firefox and Chrome; although everything is perfect with IE 5 and above. The site has been launched under Phase 1 as still there are a lot of changes to be made. You'll fing many links still under construction as they are in the process of development. The main server, who originally was hosted my ernet at New Delhi, India was shifted to NERIST E.T. Cell and so, updation can be done in a flash. With usual college stuffs and exams approaching, the next phase is likely to fall next year.

Before this, I've developed the NERIST training ang Placement Website at www.tnpnerist.com. Searching for cheap domain registrar and hosting service was a challenge. However, I made it at the end and I enjoyed developing the site. Currently, around 140 users registered to the site and it is functioning properly.

Here are a few stuffs I've prepared myself: logos, posters and general stuffs I've created over time. I'm sharing those which i've rendered at Coreldraw, Photoshop, Illustrator, and simple MS Paint!!.

I've decided to write this post as i've checked their site, their forum and the installation guide at http://www.joomunity.org, and there seem that a lot of people got confused about the installtion steps, maybe mainly because at the download area, 3 different files are provided while at the installation section, only one file is used. A proper detailed descrition is not provided for the different files; although a very small description, stating the file name, size, author etc. are given. The site's installation guide didn't do much help as many users almost get losts which file is what!! The main reason could be that, the beta versions released till date are almost unstable and there are bugs and incomplete functions and other things to work out and no one can say for sure what should work and the developers are all busy with the works. However, you should check out Joomunity as it's a perfect piece of a Joomla site.

The first thing you should do before installation is to make sure you've the right version of php, MySQL etc. Check the screengrab to see the right version.

Here, with my skills and knowledge, I've learnt how to install the beta 2 properly...elimination one major error making your Joomunity installation working. Just follow the steps:

1) Download the V4 com installer from www.joomunity.org (Click com_joomunity-installer.zip to download) and then install it from the Joomla back end as a standard Joomla component.

2) Now go to the Components and use one of the mirror sites given to install Joomunity or to install manually, download joomunity.zip from joomunity.zip and then, as seen in the picture, chose the path to the file in your PC. Voila you're done installing. (Read till the end, there's one more thing to be done...)

You may be confused about the other 2 files, joomunity_11217.zip (2.96 MB) and joomunity_11218.zip (2.96 MB). Many people find it confusing. The file joomunity_11217.zip is the old beta 1 [ensemble] version, while joomunity_11218.zip is the new version also mainly used for installation using the old version of com_joomunity-installer. If you are making a fresh install, which is the best thing to be done, you should download V4 com installer and install joomunity following the steps above.

One important things is that, most probably, while going to your "Edit profile" link, you may encounter an error as below:

Fatal error: Call to a member function model_contact_view() on a non-object in www/components/com_joomunity/applications/Profile/profile.php on line 90

Edit your component/com_joomunity/applications/Profile/profile.php file commenting line 89 to 92. Below is the code section

Why do we need CSS Hacks - for beginners

Most people, or rather web developers must have found out the limitations to the existing structure of the CSS". Separating content from the looks", that was the major aim of the existence of the CSS. However, the Cascading Style Sheet, has its own limitations.

Due to the various technologies and the front-end display structure of the various browsers, that some browsers supports some CSS functions while others doesn't; or just interprets some functions differently.

As such, look at the screenshots carefully. The displayed page is the same webpage viewed with

different browsers, ie. Internet Explorer 7, Firefox and Google Chrome. The page is a simple static page generated with plain HTML using tables and cells, Javascript a

nd CSS. The page looks extremely perfect in Internet Explorer while in Firefox and Chrome, the alignment is different and as you can see, the cell-padding and cell-spacing seems weird. The image on the page seems to float above the navigation menu on the right.

This is the main reason why we need CSS hacks. With the use of well streamed CSS functions, you can let your page displayed in different manner according to the type of browser the user is browsing with. Changing a few things on the linked Style Sheet saves you from the repeated

work of changing every file manually.. which can quite be a mess for a large website. There will be more posts following on CSS and how to hack it, making it a more powerful design tool for a webmaster. Keep checking back.

Adding "Read More" expandable link at Blogger

It's almost every bloggers' wish to have a "Read More" link displaying only a certaing part of his posts on the main page making the homepage more spacious and maintained. Here's a quick hack on blogger account to add a "Read More" link and display the rest of the story:

Log in to your blogger account select Layout of the blog which you want to modify
Navigate through Template --> Edit HTML
Take backup of your template by clicking Download Full Template. This backup will help you if you want to revert to old template
Search for in your template HTML and paste the following piece of code in between and

After pasting the code, your template should look like as shown in the following image

Save your template and click on select Expand Widget Templates

KanglaPark: The RoadMap to its birth

I've decided to start a category "Roadmap" on my KanglaPark blog. KanglaPark.com, is still early in its development phase and the blogs under this category will tell you about the phases of its development, the works i've done, the difficulties - whether in scripting, integrating or designing templates, logos or anything KanglaPark.

For the first thing, i've some hard tasks finding out

bugs from the joomunity component for Joomla. I like the looks and feel of joomunity to a much farther extend as compared to Community Builder, which have limited customizing ability.

The very first thing i struggled was a good host. I've considered hosting it at novahost.org and since the cPanel doesnt have a Fantastico installer, everythng was manual - from setting up the MySQL databases, setting folder permissions and blah blah. The configuration.php file was unwriteable and it created quite a mess showing a lot of script errors. However, i got a little help from WHS and now everythings fine.

Joomunity social networking package was my main option. Since the package is also in its early development phase, it still has got a lot of bugs, limited plugins, extensions and features. I spent a whole lot of time rectifying and editing the php codes to the needs of KanglaPark front end.

As for the present, i've one more upgradation to do and after that, the site will be launched officially. Hope u'll hang by me for now. :)

Free domain hosting account

It's been some time that i've been searching for a free webhost to host some of my sites. This time i need a larger web space and a greater bandwith capacity since i'm planning for a community social networking site (i'll let you know when i launch the site) and i need the sendmail function to be active there.

I've googled a lot of web hosting service providers and i found out that there's nothing as a free thing. Well i've hosted some of my blogs at www.000webhost.com, www.freehostia.com and blah blahs. (000webhost doesnt accept the last 2 or 3 requests i've made to open a hosting account. I dunno what's the problem but in there forum, i read that they don't allow hosting service to some countries..maybe thatswy. However, a year ago they were accepting signup from India and i'm, right now, hosting one of my blog at 000webhost and and I like there service , but recently they didn't give any response to my account opening request.

I think that's really bad of them coz if they don't provide their service to any group of people, at least they could inform them...coz watever it be, they have still time to send me refferal mails..huh!! And freehostia, their service is great but i need a larger webspace, not just 250mb and sendmail to be active)

The webhost, when searching, have some or the other disadvantages... like if it's offering large space, sendmail is off, or it has forced banners or textlinks... or if everything is what i want, it is hosted through LayeredPanel, while cPanel is what I want as it gives more control over your account..or a subdomain given by the service provider is attached forever. What i want is to host my own domain and if a sub-domain is attached to it, it's not good for SEO and besides it degrades the quality of the site.

The next option i tried is - a host for post service; this means you've to post a certain number of posts in the service providers' main forum to pay for your hosting expenses. These option seems to be a really good option as they provide the right thing i want, like large web space (it depends on the number of posts you can make per month); cPanel hosting, sendmail function activation and large bandwidth and so on.

So i'm right now checking out the host for post service at www.novahost.org and www.blazincash.net. And if you know any great free webhost provider, kindly let me know.

Virii are wondrous creations written for the sole purpose of spreading and destroying the systems of unsuspecting fools. This eliminates the systems of simpletons who can't tell that there is a problem when a 100 byte file suddenly blossoms into a 1,000 byte file. Duh... These low-lifes do not deserve to exist, so it is the coders' sacred duty to wipe their hard drives off the face of the Earth. It is a simple matter of speeding along survival of the fittest!!

Virus writing is not as hard as you might first imagine. To write an effective virus, however, you *must* know assembly language. Short, compact code are hallmarks of assembly language and these are desirable characteristics of virii. However, it is *not* necessary to write in pure assembly. C may also be used, as it allows almost total control of the system while generating relatively compact code (if you stay away from the library functions). However, you still must access the interrupts, so assembly knowledge is still required. However, it is still best to stick with pure assembly, since most operations are more easily coded in assembly. If you do not know assembly, I would recommend picking up a copy of The Microsoft Macro Assembler Bible (Nabajyoti Barkakati, ISBN #: 0-672-22659-6). It is an easy-to-follow book covering assembly in great detail. Also get yourself a copy of Undocumented DOS (Schulman, et al, ISBN #0-201-57064-5), as it is very helpful.

The question of which compiler to use arises often. I suggest using Borland Turbo Assembler and/or Borland C++. I do not have a copy of Zortech C (it was too large to download), but I would suspect that it is also a good choice. Stay away from Microsoft compilers, as they are not as flexible nor as efficient as those of other vendors.

A few more items round out the list of tools helpful in constructing virii. The latest version of Norton Utilities is one of the most powerful programs available, and is immeasurably helpful. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A COPY! You can find it on any decent board. It can be used during every step of the process, from the writing to the testing. A good debugger helps. Memory management utilities such as MAPMEM, PMAP, and MARK/RELEASE, are invaluable, especially when coding TSR virii. Sourcer, the commenting disassembler, is useful when you wish to examine the code of other virii (this is a good place to get ideas/techniques for your virus).

Now that you have your tools, you are ready to create a work of art designed to smash the systems of cretins. There are three types of virii:

1) Tiny virii (under 500 bytes) which are designed to be undetectable due to their small size. TINY is one such virus. They are generally very simple because their code length is so limited.
2) Large virii (over 1,500 bytes) which are designed to be undetectable because they cover their tracks very well (all that code DOES have a use!). The best example of this is the Whale virus, which is perhaps the best 'Stealth' virus in existence.
3) Other virii which are not designed to be hidden at all (the writers don't give a shit). The common virus is like this. All overwriting virii are in this category.

You must decide which kind of virus you wish to write. I will mostly be discussing the second type (Stealth virii). However, many of the techniques discribed may be easily applied to the first type (tiny virii). However, tiny virii generally do not have many of the "features" of larger virii, such as directory traversal. The third type is more of a replicating trojan-type, and will warrant a brief (very, very brief!) discussion later.

A virus may be divided into three parts: the replicator, the concealer, and the bomb. The replicator part controls the spread of the virus to other files, the concealer keeps the virus from being detected, and the bomb only executes when the activation conditions of the virus (more on that later) are satisfied.

The website features the current news, happenings and updates in the small state apart from national and international news. If you want to know more about Manipur, e-pao.net is a good start. Through the e-frenz section, you can make friends with lots of users from the state and the chat room is, despite of the usual numbers of persons from the state who are active users of the internet, active throughtout the whole day and you'll meet someone to talk too... and one more thing to mention, unlike yahoo messenger or others, u won't meet any bots that imitates human and chat with you!!

As the Information and Publicity Secy for the Students' Union of NERIST (SUN), I was assigned to launch a website for the union.

I tried registering the website at the yahoo small business section, the main reason being "cheap". Later, since I don't have a credit card and the payment was made through my paypal account, the order was cancelled and I'd to look for some other options. I tried for domainsarefree.com and they accept payments through credit cards only, and so i'd to opt out that option again. Finally, as usual, where all my other domains are registered, I went for Namecheap and use the october coupon code "INDIANSUMMER" and get a discount of 88 cents. Well before that i tried Godaddy.com but they ask for some $14+ and I obviously had to go for other cheaper ones.

SUN is now online as studentsunionofnerist.org. The website will be officially launched in a few days as I'm working on it right now.

For my Shillong trip, i'll post a few pics in my next post. Lots of stuffs to do.. aint it??

Well i've been thinking of getting myself a music player... talking of which, i was checking apple.co.in for some of the ipod models. Ipod nano and Ipod classic, in my opinion, has had its day on this planet. Ipod shuffle, on the other hand, is cool but the latest Ipod touch is the current talk of the town and I'd like to have one myself. From apple.co.in, i found out that an 8 gb Ipod touch cost around INR 12,800 plus taxes, such as the VAT. The price is huge so i've to think wisely before ever buying one. If you own one, lemme know if the pirce is right and btw, personally speaking, keeping aside the price factor, you should really have one too!!

As the autumn break approaches, me and a few of my frens are planning to make a visit to Shillong, this time solely on the purpose of a tourist. Last time i went there, I was with a fren and I visited only some of the major centers in the central City area...i like the place... slight chilly climate, cool scenic beauties.. the place looks gr8.

We leave our college tomorrow evening, reach Guwahati by early morning tomorrow and get ourself a Sumo from there. We should be reaching shillong by around 11:00am at the latest (as per the best of my knowledge). Our plan is for staying upto 3 or 4 days there (which means, i prob'ly won't be updating my blog for these days... or maybe i'll update it during my stay there).

I've a fren there but since i couldn't get his contact number, we've to look out for the hotels ourselves. 4 of us are going and we are planning of reaching Cherrapunji, India's rainiest place... (i dunno if the term "rainiest" ever exist..lolzzz). I'll post some of the photos later and will be updating my blog with my experiences there. Whatever, of the two times i've been there before, i enjoyed being there, only speaking of a specific experience, i was invited to the get-together party for a group of presbyterians by my fren's Ex-Gf. I din't know there language and a lot of ppl were giving long, really boring speeches and i kinda get sleepy.. and i did. I felt asleep and my fren nudged me and woke me up (well he wanted to impress his gf!!!!). That was the only boring part, but after the speeches were over, we'd a nice buffet... and i ate everything on the menu.

The hanging bridge

Early morning today, we'd planned for a trip to the hanging bridge at the locality. The bridge is situated east of our college campus and we'd to walk across the unfinised iron bridge and the Post Graduate students' block (Block H).

We planned to start our journey at around 5:00am but as usual, as an engineering student, we were late and started at 6:00am (IS dragged me out of my bed!!). We'd never been there before, only that we'd seen the bridge from a distant.

The hanging bridge must've been built many years ago as the side steel fibres have already begun to snapped off. A lot of wood planks from the floor below were missing and we'd to take hold of the side steel threads to keep our balance. At first we saw only a few gaps but after reaching the middle part, we found a lot of planks missing. We took a few video shots while making the crossing and i guess you must laugh your heart out if you see us doin' that. The bridge was swaying a lot, the water below was flowing and it was enough to make you dizzy, to make you lose your balance. But as we were crossing one of the big gaps, a local school boy came and just walked up ahead of us as if there were no gaps at all. We just stood there amazed!!

I took this one with my cell phone and it's not that clear as the photo above.. and by the way, i'm thinking of uploading the videos at youtube. I'll post the links later.. do have a look.

Girls and bubbles

What do you know about the similarity between GIRLS and BUBBLES??

When i speak of a girl, i mean the girl in general and I guess, i've been thinking about it watching this picture on my right which i happened to render it myself a couple of weeks ago, that there are certain things that keeps the two connected.

The first thing is 'fragility'. Girls are fragile, so is a bubble.. Whether you agree me or not, thats not the question right now. It's me bloggin here and it's my thoughts that's being written here... (care to leave a comment..!!)

And the second thing is that - You can never keep hold of a girl... nor can you a bubble. The moment you try to keep hold and grabs a girl, she tends to get vanished; a bubble on the other hand bursts!! What you need, is a constant support to the bubble, blow some air from your mouth (even if you are out of air, you've to) keeping is afloat, not letting it touch anything, or it bursts up. Similarly, a girl needs constant support, physically as well as emotionally, and if you are not the one supporting, she needs it from some one else.

Third; look at your own reflection on the curve surface of the Bubble. You see You, but not yourself. When you are with a girl, you are different; you are not what you were, and you tend to change, if not always. On the bubble, your face is distorted becoz of the curvature and whether it makes you more handsome or less, that depends on your looks. It's the same the other way too.

Are women too powerful for a man.. that man opted for changes that he thinks he should make or he can make but in the long run, he finds it wrong?? I guess so.

It's been my experience and I've seen enough men crying for a lot of different reason - the loss of a love one, heart broke, feeling loved or feeling happy and blah blahs... The only thing i keep wondering is why do men tend to hide it... well in a way different to women??

Well everybody does, both females i mean, try to hide but with men, it's different. Men do cry, and hardly men get to know that crying makes one feel better!! Perhaps men think that crying doesn't really sound macho, but what we are to know is, there is nothing such as a macho... it's just an ideal theory.

Next time, if you happen to be a man reading this post, try crying... over anything. See how gud you feel after that..lolzzz

The above is what the first post read. The post was dated 18th September and by that, I could just comment, despite of all the bloggers' stuffs and services Google is providing, he is a REAL LATE BLOGGER!!! I don't think he owns any other blogs as per Matt Cutts's remark.

Keeping in track of his blog, Sergey has the Google Analytics installed on his blog; perhaps knowing that a lot of people will be giving him free suggestions on Search Engine optimization or on DIY - tweaking blog template.. which would sound rather funny if for the Google creator!!

In one of the short 2 or 3 posts at current, Sergey mentioned about the likely development of Parkinson’s Disease on him and which might affect him when he’s older.

I've been trying to make my my mobile bills payment for the last 2 days using my SBI net banking account but i've been facing some real irritating problems.

The first time i tried to make the e-payment, after redirecting to the onlinesbi payment page, I logged in there but some errors says "Invalid merchant account information". I tried a couple of times but the same result came up. I thought it was Airtel's problem with their account information at SBI coz i've seen the same result while tryin to buy some flowers online once. Later, I checked with one of my fren's account but there, everything was working fine. He can make the payments and no errors ever crept up. So I thought i'd try again and I did and this time a complete new thing happened. After I've been redirected to the onlinesbi page, I gave me username and password but i just could not sign it. It says "Session error...".

I kinda get irritated and as my net line was a bit slow, i thought it might be becoz of the connection speed but i've tried at least a couple of times that if it has to work, it prob'ly should be working by now. Have anyone ever faced the same problem yet???

I've been working on developing every bit of the NERIST Training and placement website . Being an official website, I'm not allowed to do what I use to do with my own sites. I've developed and launched a dozen other websites but they were done on my own interest and I'd run a few other blogs running sponsored posts but this time, web administration has make a turn for me because of the responsibility i've put into.

If you are a web administrator, you prob'ly know how it's like to maintain such an active website under your own moderation. The site is strictly moderated just to ensure that only NERIST students are registered and moderating every students is a tough task coz you hardly know all the 1200 students on campus.

I have used the ever popular Joomla CMS there and I just installed the Fireboard forum. I've had enough experiences running this component and some others while i was on my own XAMPP server at the early developing phase and I kinda like Fireboard. Let's see how the users respond to this new forum. The reason why I'm saying is that, hardly people know the use of forums. Everybody is busy with social networking sites or youtube and thats one reason why i put a poll at the homepage "Does tnpnerist needs a forum?"

First thing why this blog ever started is "because of a change I've opted" in my life.

My life, now tagged with 'informals', is going to be different and i'm sharing my thoughts out with you. I think I'd try to be interesting enough that you don't get bored during the journey.
